About the Club

The Western North Carolina Model Railroaders is a 100% National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) club located in Asheville, NC.

The "Western North Carolina Model Railroaders, Inc." named Western North Carolina Model Railroaders are hobbyists drawn together by a common interest in railroading and model railroading. Our club was chartered on May 19, 1974. Operations are conducted by officers and a board of directors, and are governed by a constitution and bylaws. Membership is open to all men and women of all ages. Visitors and prospective members are always welcome at all group activities.

Our goals are to promote model railroading within western North Carolina. We sponsor and support model train shows, conventions, clinics, contests, field trips and any other train related activities within a reasonable distance from Asheville.

Program at our meetings are designed to provide information about railroading and model railroading, to help improve skills in various area of model railroading and to offer opportunities for members to participate in model railroading activities and events at local, regional and national levels.

Members of the club also have the opportunity to participate in "Modular Model Railroading," one of the hottest trends in today's hobby. Members build and operate individual 2 ft. by 4 ft. HO scale modules, each of which conforms to a common standard. The modules can be combined into a large layout which is often displayed and operated for the public at malls, exhibitions, train shows and other events.

Each year the club holds its annual Western North Carolina Train Show. This event, which attracts hundreds of spectators, features operating layouts and numerous vendors selling many hobby-related items. It has become a tradition in the mountain area.

Our newspaper, "The Semaphore." is published monthly and features information about upcoming meetings and other club activities, articles of railroad interest and other hobby-related news.
